Purdue Pharma settlement news gives hope to those affected by the opioid crisis

Great News and Renewed Hope for Anyone Affected by the Opioid Crisis

On October 21st, 2020, Purdue Pharma, maker of OxyContin, pled guilty to three felony criminal charges, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and violate anti-kickback laws.
This $8 billion settlement is the largest settlement of its kind with a pharmaceutical company. A majority of funds can provide those who want to come off opioids to get necessary effective treatment.
The Justice Department said these funds would help state and local governments provide treatment facilities with extraordinary new resources. Nearly $2 billion will go towards victims of the opioid crisis.
This can mean some well-deserved justice for the death of hundreds of thousands of people from opioid overdoses. Moreover, it’s a small step toward righting the wrongs of Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family. Especially since they knowingly caused unimaginable pain and suffering for immense profit.

More Good News

Many others are also saying enough is enough. For example, five senators wrote a letter to the bankruptcy judge in the case. They said it’s time to call out any business, like Purdue Pharma, that profits from other people’s pain. Besides, over 2,600 lawsuits charge that Purdue Pharma was instrumental in creating this country’s opioid epidemic. This was due to their deceitful marketing and distribution. It looks like those days are finally over for Purdue Pharma and companies like them.
Steve Miller, chairman of the board for Purdue Pharma since 2018, said, “Purdue deeply regrets and accepts responsibility for the misconduct detailed by the Department of Justice in the agreed statement of facts.
In a separate statement, members of the Sackler family, who lost control of Purdue Pharma in the settlement, expressed “deep compassion for people who suffer from opioid addiction and abuse and hope the proposal will be implemented as swiftly as possible to help address their critical needs.”
Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family have had their day of reckoning. Now they have an opportunity to make amends for the havoc they’ve wreaked, first, by funding research into addiction science, effective treatment, and prevention.

How Does This Help People Seeking Treatment?

There’s a chance that the prosecution of Purdue Pharma, the Sackler family, and other opioid makers and distributors could, in essence, cut the head off of the snake. Therefore, by eliminating the chief culprits in the opioid crisis, we may have a chance at controlling the opioid epidemic.
