The mind-body connection is strong and the relationship between depression, anxiety and pain has been the subject of many studies. Researchers say it’s possible for depression and anxiety to be both a cause of some types of pain and a complication of it.
The quality of life can suffer greatly for people who are in constant, agonizing and/or widespread pain. This type of pain can hijack careers and relationships, making everyday life so hard to navigate. While it is difficult for many people to cope, it’s important to know that these disorders are treatable. Conditions such as migraines, arthritis and fibromyalgia can take a toll on sufferers, especially if they are unable to find adequate relief for their pain.

Treatment Option for Chronic Pain Patients

The fear of pain can exacerbate the anxiety a person may feel. Chronic pain, when paired with depression or anxiety, is thought to lower the tolerance for pain in some patients. There are many treatment options available for people who suffer from pain along with depression and anxiety. These include medications, physical therapy, exercise and holistic therapies such as relaxation, meditation, hypnosis, yoga, acupuncture, massage and bio/neuro-feedback.
Psychotherapy and cognitive behavior therapy may also be beneficial for many people. Doctors and mental health workers will likely suggest lifestyle changes also. When suffering from pain and psychological stressors, it’s important for people to get adequate sleep, to exercise, to get a healthy amount of sleep and to eat properly to provide optimal nutrition.
