Oregon Detox for Opioids

Data from the Oregon Public Health Authority in 2016 revealed that this state has the highest rates of prescription opioid abuse. Furthermore, there are more deaths related to prescription opioids than any other drugs. Reports show that at least three Oregon citizens die weekly from narcotic drug poisoning. Why are not more effective Oregon Detox Centers available? How are so many Oregonians getting their hands on these medications?
Many opioid addicted patients, started using the drug as a medical necessity. These patients became drug dependent after developing a tolerance for the medications, subsequently increasing the use. Others may take these drugs recreationally. The DEA said popular methods of diversion in Oregon include unscrupulous websites which sell narcotic drugs without requiring a legitimate prescription. Others issues affecting the epidemic are illegal prescribing and irresponsible dispensing by healthcare professionals, prescription forgery, doctor shopping, theft and pharmacy burglaries.

Oregon Opioid Epidemic

In 2016, Oregon introduced legislation to battle the opioid epidemic.
This included improving their Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) and increasing access to Naloxone. Pharmacists can now distribute Naloxone, and social service agencies can administer this useful drug. Naloxone is a medication which reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, and it can save many lives. The drug is given to individuals who have overdosed and are unresponsive; it gives them the additional time to receive the necessary medical services.

Oregon Opiate Detox and Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment is very common in Oregon for individuals seeking help for opioid dependence, but it is not a detox per se.  This type of “drug treatment” often includes the use of Suboxone or Methadone. It is important to understand that these medications are also opiates and can are highly addictive.
MAT drugs must regularly be taken, or withdrawal can occur. The withdrawal symptoms from Buprenorphine-based drugs or Methadone can be hard and last long. Patients who wish to quit taking opiates altogether have a difficult time because they often cannot withstand the withdrawal symptoms, even while in a drug rehab.

Methadone Addiction

The misuse of methadone is one of the top concerns for officials in this Pacific Northwest state. While it can be used to relieve moderate to severe pain, this opiate (narcotic) analgesic is better known as a long-term maintenance therapy for opiate addiction. Methadone produces similar effects to other opiate drugs and helps prevent withdrawal in those taking it. Usually, patients seek Methadone treatment due to heroin or other painkiller addiction such as Hydrocodone and oxycodone. These pharmaceutical drugs are prone to diversion, trafficking, and abuse, according to a state fact sheet released by the DEA.
Hydrocodone and Oxycodone are used in combination drugs with other ingredients such as acetaminophen and is a highly potent opioid.
Hydrocodone based drugs include: Vicodin, Lortab, Maxidone, Norco, Zydone, Vicoprofen, Ibudone and Reprexain.
Oxycodone based drugs include: OxyContin, Oxyfast, Percocet, Endocet, Roxicodone, Xtampza ER.
