The Southern Nevada Health District has recently issued a stark warning to the public regarding the ongoing threat posed by fentanyl in the community. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) reported six suspected drug-related overdoses in Clark County within a mere 36-hour period from September 25, 2022, to September 27, 2022. Even more alarming is that four out of these six overdoses have been preliminarily identified as fentanyl overdoses.
To put these numbers into perspective, between January and July 2022, there were a staggering 110 fentanyl overdose deaths among Clark County residents alone. This is part of a disturbing trend, as 2021 saw a total of 225 fentanyl-related deaths, and in 2020, there were 191 such fatalities.
“We want everyone to be aware that fentanyl is continuing to take a toll on the community,” says Dr. Fermin Leguen, District Health Officer for the Southern Nevada Health District. “In addition to raising awareness about the risks of synthetic opioids, residents should know that there are resources available to them that can help prevent a fentanyl or opioid overdose.”
Lifesaving Resources
In the face of this escalating crisis, the Health District and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend proactive measures for individuals and their loved ones:
1. Naloxone (Narcan®)
Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is an opioid antagonist that can be administered to help reverse opioid overdoses. It is highly recommended for individuals at risk of opioid overdose and those who may be in a position to assist someone at risk. By carrying naloxone, lives can be saved, and overdoses can be swiftly counteracted.
2. Fentanyl Test Strips
To address the perilous presence of fentanyl in illicit substances, the Health District has launched a program that provides fentanyl test strips. These strips can detect whether fentanyl is present in a pill or powder, allowing individuals to make informed choices and avoid unknowingly consuming this lethal substance.
The Health District’s main public health center offers free naloxone and fentanyl test strips at its pharmacy, located at 280 S. Decatur Blvd. Additional naloxone access points can be found through the Nevada State Overdose Reversal Medication Finder, while additional fentanyl test strip distribution locations are available at Nevada State Fentanyl Test Strip Distribution Sites. Local harm reduction organizations, including Health District partner Trac-B Exchange, also offer overdose prevention measures and training to the community.
Opioid-Related Overdose Statistics
To underscore the gravity of the opioid crisis in Clark County:
- From January 2018 to July 2022, there was a provisional estimate of 1412 opioid-related overdose deaths in Clark County.
- Of these deaths, 653 (46 percent) were attributed to fentanyl.
- Among fentanyl-related deaths, 65 percent were male, with 51 percent being White, 17 percent Black, 3 percent Asian, and 24 percent Hispanic/Latino.
- Younger adults face the highest risk, with the age groups 20-24, 30-34, and 25-29 being the most vulnerable to fatal fentanyl overdoses.
The Lethality of Fentanyl
Fentanyl is a synthetic, man-made opioid that stands out for its extraordinary potency, being 80-100 times stronger than morphine. What makes it particularly deadly is that even a minuscule amount, as little as 2 milligrams (equivalent to 2 grains of salt), can lead to a fatal overdose.
Deaths involving illicit fentanyl have been on the rise nationwide, and this potent substance is often mixed with other illicit drugs, making it difficult for users to discern its presence. For instance, fentanyl is frequently found in pills or powders that mimic heroin, cocaine, or methamphetamine. Tragically, individuals purchasing these substances are often unaware of the hidden danger of fentanyl.
The Role of Counterfeit Pills
Counterfeit pills are a significant contributor to the rise in fatal overdoses. Fentanyl is increasingly being pressed into these counterfeit pills and sold on the streets under the guise of well-known pharmaceuticals like Percocet, oxycodone, or Xanax. This deceptive practice has played a pivotal role in the surge of fatal overdoses, as individuals unknowingly ingest these dangerous substances.
Multiple Factors in Fatal Fentanyl Overdoses
It’s important to note that many fatal fentanyl overdoses involve a combination of substances. The most common co-involved drugs in these tragedies include prescription opioids (24 percent), benzodiazepines (24 percent), psychostimulants like methamphetamine (28 percent), and heroin (6 percent). These percentages are not mutually exclusive, as more than one drug can contribute to a single fatal overdose.
