Vicodin Detox And Pregnancy

Table of Contents

An Unsupervised Or Cold Turkey Detox From Vicodin Can Result In Serious Complications For Unborn Babies Whose Mothers Are Dependent Or Addicted
Opiate addiction during pregnancy can be perilous. It can put the mother and unborn child at risk for complications. Likewise, detox is not recommended because of the stress this can cause for a fetus. Women who are dependent upon Vicodin should talk with their doctors if they’ve become pregnant.
Vicodin (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) is a potent pain reliever but it can be habit forming. When patients become addicted to this powerful narcotic, they become subject to withdrawal symptoms if they try to stop. Withdrawal in utero can lead to miscarriage, pre-term labor and other complications such as birth defects.
Some symptoms the mother may face during Vicodin withdrawal include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Excessive sweating
  • Body chills
  • Intense cravings
  • Tremors
  • Stress that can lead to fluctuations in blood pressure
  • Severe agitation

Vicodin Detox and Pregnancy
Recommended Opiate Treatment During Pregnancy Is Thought To Be Safest Option
Methadone is “replacement” or “substitution” therapy that can help head off withdrawal and reduce cravings. The idea is to have patients stop taking Vicodin, which will be replaced by Methadone. It’s also an opiate but is thought to have less potential for abuse and addiction. Methadone treatment is generally offered on an outpatient basis and includes medical supervision. This would require the expectant mother to participate in scheduled doctors’ visits on a regular basis, which is imperative during pregnancy for the health and welfare of both mother and fetus.
Since Methadone is also an opiate, it is likely the baby will be born with a physical dependence to the drug. They may experience withdrawal symptoms such as: excessive, high-pitched crying; irritability; rapid breathing; sneezing; yawning; and gastrointestinal issues. The infants can be eased through these symptoms with low doses of methadone to wean them and help them adjust. These infants are often kept in dark, calm environments and monitored closely until stabilized.
Detox And Rapid Detox Procedures Are Highly Discouraged During Pregnancy
Waismann Method Treatment is the popular choice for opiate addiction treatment among people from around the world. However, this rapid detox is not recommended during pregnancy because of risks to the mother and fetus. Any type of detox can throw the mother into withdrawal, which can be detrimental – even deadly – for the unborn child.
This renowned treatment will only treat patients who are deemed well enough for detox after stringent medical tests. On a number of occasions, we have treated new mothers who took Methadone during pregnancy and wanted to finally become completely opiate free. If you are pregnant and dependent on Vicodin, please speak with a doctor right away about an appropriate treatment plan. And Waismann Method will be here if you need us down the road.
