West Virginia Detoxification Information

This Appalachian state has a very serious problem when it comes to prescription drug abuse, addiction and overdose. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in 2007 that West Virginia had the highest drug overdose rate in the country. It has nearly seven times the amount of overdose deaths as South Dakota, which has the lowest number of these deaths in the country. The CDC said in 2010 that the huge increase in overdose death rates in recent years is due largely to opioid painkillers such as OxyContin, Vicodin and Percocet. In 2007, there were nearly twice as many deaths caused by prescription painkillers in this country as there were deaths caused by cocaine. That same year, there were more than five times as many painkiller-related deaths as there were heroin-related deaths, according to the CDC. Fatal drug overdoses are more common in rural areas of the state. West Virginia recorded an astounding 550 percent increase in these deaths from 1999 to 2004, according to the agency.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said in 2009 that the most commonly abused and diverted pharmaceuticals in West Virginia are opiates including oxycodone and hydrocodone, along with benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax. Methadone is also a problem in terms of diversion, according to the DEA. The availability of these drugs is of serious concern to law enforcement officials. Data gathered from retail pharmacies and compiled by a private company show that West Virginia had the highest prescription drug use of all states in 2009, according to Forbes.com. Nationally, as more and more prescriptions are being written, availability of these drugs on the street increases. The Internet also plays a role in the epidemic. Many shady sites offer opiate painkillers without a prescription. Common methods of diversion in West Virginia include illegal sale and distribution by healthcare workers, forged prescriptions, doctor shopping, employee theft and receiving these drugs from friends and family members.

Waismann Method

West Virginia’s rural areas and mining towns have a high rate of prescription painkiller use, abuse, dependence and addiction. People who become dependent upon opiates have a place to turn. Waismann Method in southern California is known as the go-to place for professional, medical opiate detox. We perform our procedure in the safety of a hospital, using intravenous medicine to cleanse opiates from patients’ opiate receptors. This takes place while patients are lightly sedated by general deep sedation and resting comfortably. Our procedure speeds up the withdrawal phase and symptoms develop and pass while patients are under deep sedation. Patients aren’t consciously aware they are even passing through withdrawal. Our procedure lasts less than two hours and we require that patients stay between 3 and 6 days. From there, they can return home or choose to extend recovery work in our Domus Retreat transitional living facility.
