Kentucky Detoxification Information

The diversion of pharmaceutical drugs remains a high threat to residents living in Kentucky, due to their availability and ease of access. The Federal Drug Enforcement Administration says the biggest problem in the southeastern section of the commonwealth is with opioid medications containing oxycodone and hydrocodone. These drugs are very potent and when used medically are very successful at controlling pain. When taken recreationally, they can lead to dependence very quickly. OxyContin and Percocet contain oxycodone and Norco, Lortab and Vicodin contain hydrocodone. The agency says diverted pharmaceuticals are also widely available in central and northern Kentucky. Prescription drug abuse is a fast-growing problem throughout Kentucky and the rest of the country. In 2005, the Office of National Drug Control Policy recorded more than 8,500 deaths resulting from prescription drug abuse in America. Opiates played a big role in those deaths, according to officials.

Most people who take opiates for legitimate pain can do so successfully. If they’re taken in high doses or for long periods of time, they can cause a tolerance to build. This is usually followed by an escalation of use. From here, an opiate dependence is not far behind. Purchases of prescription painkillers over the Internet continue to be a big problem in Kentucky, the DEA says. Unscrupulous websites can offer prescription pills that are counterfeit, tampered with or out of date. Some pills bought over the Internet could be delivered in the wrong dose. Others have reported receiving the wrong medication altogether. Many of these sites, some originating in other countries, don’t ask questions or even require a prescription. People may also try to obtain several prescriptions for misuse or abuse by doctor shopping, forging prescriptions, employee theft, pharmacy theft and diversion by medical professionals. Kentucky takes part in a prescription drug-monitoring program, a database used to track patients’ prescription histories in an effort to cut down on diversion and abuse.
