Alprazolam Side Effects
Additional Information
Alprazolam, a member of the benzodiazepine drug class, can cause a host of side effects, some unpleasant. Each patient taking the prescription medication may experience different symptoms, depending on the dose, the person’s individual body chemistry and whether or not it was taken in combination with other substances or medications. Alprazolam, the generic name for Xanax, is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression. It’s in the same drug class as Klonopin, Ativan and Valium. Side effects can range from mild to uncomfortable and may subside shortly after initial dosing. Alprazolam attaches to certain receptors in the brain and can lead to development of physical and/or psychological dependency. Taking it for a regular period of time can cause the body to build up a tolerance, meaning that more and more needs to be taken to achieve desired effects. All medications have the potential to cause some side effects and alprazolam’s prescription label lists these to inform patients about what they may experience.
Alprazolam Side Effects Can Be Mild or Quite Serious
Some of the more mild side effects reported with alprazolam therapy include: dizziness, drowsiness, irritability, muscle weakness, slurred speech, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, constipation, forgetfulness, dry mouth, increased sweating and changes in appetite and sex drive. More serious side effects which should be reported to your doctor include unusual weakness or fatigue, confusion, forgetfulness, trouble urinating or in the amount of urination, depression, muscle cramps, insomnia, mood changes, excitability, aggressive behavior, fainting or feelings of lightheadedness, difficulty speaking and falling due to compromised coordination. Serious side effects which may point to allergic reaction include difficult breathing, hives, itching, skin rash, or swelling of the lips, face, throat or tongue.
