Alprazolam
Additional Information
Alprazolam is the generic name for Xanax and Xanax XR, used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression. It is in a group of drugs called benzodiazepines and works by slowing chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced. It also has the ability to be habit forming, leading to physical and/or psychological dependence. An anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive or unrealistic anxiety and worrying. If a patient is diagnosed with panic disorder, he or she likely experiences recurring and unexpected panic attacks. Alprazolam can be effective at treating these disorders but should be prescribed and taken with care. The benzodiazepine class of drugs also includes Klonopin, Ativan and Valium, all which may require detox if prolonged use leads to dependence. These drugs can interact with alcohol and other drugs including barbiturates and narcotics. This can exaggerate their sedative properties and slowing of activity in the brain.
Alprazolam Side Effects, Dependence and Withdrawal
Alprazolam can cause a wide range of side effects including drowsiness and lightheadedness. At higher doses, side effects can include memory and speech problems, fatigue, constipation and changes in appetite. Used regularly or over a prolonged period, Alprazolam can lead to development of tolerance. Once the drug builds up in a patient’s system, its effectiveness can be diminished. This may cause some to escalate their dose or misuse Alprazolam in other ways. This is dangerous and can cause dependency. A physical addiction to the drug is evident if withdrawal symptoms present once use is stopped suddenly or gradually lessened. Associated withdrawal symptoms can include headaches, nausea, vomiting, sweating, insomnia and anxiety. More severe cases of withdrawal can be marked by seizures. It’s important that benzodiazepine dependence be treated medically to manage the withdrawal period and maximize safety and comfort of patients.
